Charles XI's administration of Swedish Pomerania was marked by the "Reduktion" — a sweeping resumption of crown lands that had been alienated to the nobility, imposed on the Pomeranian estates with considerably more friction than on the Swedish mainland. The Witten was a minor denomination inherited from the old Hanseatic monetary tradition, still circulating in the Baltic coastal towns long after it had become economically marginal. Ahlström's 214b designation distinguishes a specific die variant within an already thin emission.
