Obverse description Central field features a rampant griffin passant to the left, the heraldic emblem of the city of Rostock, rendered in a bold medieval style typical of north German civic coinage. The griffin is depicted with raised forepaw and spread wings, occupying the majority of the flan. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend MONETA ROSTOCHIENSIS runs in uncial Gothic lettering along the outer border. The strike is characteristic of late 14th-century hammered silver, showing some irregular flan edges.
