Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the heraldic griffin of Rostock — the city's emblem — is depicted in high relief, facing left with wings displayed and talons prominent, rendered in a bold medieval graphic style characteristic of North German civic coinage. The griffin occupies nearly the entire field within the inner circle. Surrounding the inner circle, the circular legend reads MONETA ROSTOCH in uncial lettering, separated by small pellets or stops.

Reverse description Within a beaded inner circle, a long cross with a quatrefoil at its centre is depicted, dividing the field into four quarters; a six-pointed star appears in one quarter, adding a further decorative element typical of North German Witten coinage of the 14th century. The cross arms extend nearly to the inner circle. The surrounding circular legend in uncial lettering reads GRYPHES, identifying the griffin emblem of the issuing city.
