This pattern was struck in anticipation of Haile Selassie's coronation, which would not occur until November 1930. In 1929 he still held the title of Regent and Heir Apparent under Empress Zewditu, making the political timing of a gold pattern in his name a pointed declaration of where power actually resided — and where it was headed.
KM#Pn8 is among a small group of pattern issues from this transitional period, almost certainly produced in limited quantities for approval purposes and never released for circulation.
