Werner von Falkenstein served as Archbishop of Trier from 1388 until his death in 1418, presiding over a see chronically entangled in debt and territorial disputes with neighboring lords. The Weißpfennig — literally "white penny," so named for the pale silver wash applied to a billon or debased silver flan — was a denomination peculiar to the Rhenish ecclesiastical mints, where archbishops wielded coinage rights as a primary revenue instrument. Trier's mint output in this narrow window reflects the fiscal pressures of maintaining political independence against both the Palatinate and the Luxembourg dynasty.
