Flanking the central arms in the corners are three smaller shields: to the upper left the crescent and star of Caspar, to the upper right the lion passant of Melchior, and at the base the cross of Balthasar, referencing the relics of the Three Magi preserved at Cologne Cathedral. A Latin civic legend surrounds the composition, separated by stops. The design reflects the strong civic and religious identity of late medieval Cologne. |
