Ferdinand II ruled Tyrol as an archduke from 1564 until his death in 1595, and the Landgraviate of Upper Alsace fell within his territorial holdings — a remnant of Habsburg administrative reach into the left bank of the Rhine. The Vierer denomination was a petty coin of account used for small daily transactions, and billon issues like this one were chronically distrusted by the populations forced to use them, with periodic local ordinances attempting to regulate their acceptance.
