Obverse description Left-facing bare-headed portrait bust of Duke Alexander Carl of Anhalt-Bernburg occupies the central field, rendered in high relief with fine hair detail characteristic of mid-19th century German court portraiture. The circumferential legend reads ALEXANDER CARL HERZOG ZU ANHALT around the rim in raised Latin lettering. The Berlin Mint mark 'A' appears at the base of the truncation. The effigy is attributed to the Berlin Mint's workshop and reflects the classical Neoclassical style prevalent in German state coinage of the period.
