Beschrijving voorzijde Four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform order around a central square perforation, reading clockwise from top: 天明通寶 (Thien Minh Thong Bao). The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) in raised relief, separated by the square hole and framed by a plain inner rim bordering the perforation and a raised outer rim. The field between the characters and the rims is flat and unadorned. The coin displays a dark patina with encrustation consistent with zinc alloy coinage of the Đàng Trong period.

Aanvullende informatie

Đàng Trong — the southern Vietnamese polity governed by the Nguyễn lords — operated in a state of permanent political fiction during this period, issuing coinage under reign titles while nominally acknowledging the Lê dynasty emperors in the north. The Thien Minh era title belongs to Nguyễn lord Nguyễn Phúc Khoát, who in 1744 formally declared himself Vương and established a rival court structure at Phú Xuân, an act of de facto independence that stopped short of claiming the imperial throne outright.

Zinc cash coins from Đàng Trong are notably more susceptible to corrosion than their Chinese-influenced copper counterparts, and surviving examples in collectible condition are genuinely scarce.
