Obverse description Four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square hole, reading clockwise from the top: 明 (Minh), 通 (Thông), 命 (Mạng), 寶 (Bảo), forming the reign title legend 明命通寶 (Minh Mạng Thông Bảo). The characters are rendered in relief within a flat field, framed by a raised square border surrounding the central perforation and a raised rim at the outer edge. The casting is notably crude in execution, consistent with the coin's attribution as a contemporary circulation forgery.
