Obverse description Four Chinese characters arranged around a central square perforation, reading top to bottom and right to left in the traditional manner: 政 (top), 通 (right), 和 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the legend Chính Hòa Thông Bảo. The characters are rendered in a regularscript style within a raised inner rim that frames the square hole. The outer field is plain, bounded by a raised outer rim showing the patina and surface texture characteristic of cast zinc coinage.
