| Obverse description | Round cast bronze cash coin featuring a central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in the traditional cross pattern around the perforation. The four-character reign legend reads 安法元寶 (An Phap Nguyen Bao), disposed in the conventional top-bottom-right-left reading order. The characters are rendered in a somewhat archaic clerical script style, cast in moderate relief against a plain, unadorned field. The surface displays a heavy dark brown patina with areas of green and reddish corrosion consistent with long burial, giving the coin a well-worn, aged appearance. No inner or outer rim rims are prominently defined, typical of early Vietnamese cast coinage of this period. |

The An Pháp thông bảo was issued under the brief Vietnamese administration established during the Ming occupation — a period when the Yongle Emperor's forces had absorbed Đại Việt into the Chinese provincial system as Jiaozhi. Coins struck in this window reflect Chinese administrative control rather than indigenous Vietnamese authority, making the "Empire of Vietnam" attribution a retrospective convenience. The occupation ended when Lê Lợi's Lam Sơn uprising expelled Ming forces in 1428.
