Obverse description Right-facing crowned half-length effigy of Charles I, draped and armoured, holding a sceptre in his right hand and an orb in his left. The mintmaster's initial 'B' (for Briot) appears at the commencement of the circumferential legend, with a thistle privy mark at its conclusion. The portrait reflects the refined Renaissance style characteristic of Nicolas Briot's engraving work for the Scottish milled coinage.
