The turner — worth two pennies Scots, or one-twelfth of an English penny — was so debased in perceived value that contemporaries routinely dismissed it as near-worthless. Charles II's Scottish copper coinage of this period was issued under licence to private contractors rather than directly by the Crown, a arrangement that generated persistent complaints about inconsistent quality and weight across the run.
