Reverse description A large, finely detailed thistle plant occupies the central field, rendered with a prominent flower head and broad, lobed leaves spreading to either side at the base, serving as the national emblem of Scotland. The thistle rises from a short stem above an open ground, with the foliage providing a naturalistic framing device. A circular Latin legend surrounds the device, incorporating the date at the top of the coin. The motto, a traditional Scottish heraldic maxim, encircles the entire composition within a milled border. The relief is bold and the engraving relatively vigorous for a copper issue of this denomination.
