| Obverse description | Central device comprises the royal cipher 'CR' (Carolus Rex) surmounted by a large imperial crown, the whole rendered in bold relief within a beaded inner circle. The numeral 'II' appears to the right of the cipher, denoting Charles II. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, separated from the central device by the beaded border. The design is characteristic of the milled coinage issued for Scotland under Charles II, executed in a compact and somewhat crude style typical of the Edinburgh Mint's copper issues of this period. |
