The Rasht mint operated in Gilan province on the Caspian littoral, a region whose silk trade and proximity to Russian commercial networks made it one of the more economically active provincial mints under Nasir al-Din Shah. During his long reign — which began in 1848 after the execution of his reformist prime minister Amir Kabir in 1852 — provincial gold coinage was struck with inconsistent quality control, and Rasht pieces frequently show softness at the center due to inadequate die pressure rather than wear.
KM#853.8 distinguishes the Rasht attribution from the broader type by mint signature alone.
