The Tabaristan mint, situated in the humid Caspian coastal region, was among the less prolific gold-striking facilities under Fath Ali Shah. This tuman was issued during the turbulent period immediately following the Russo-Persian War — the Treaty of Turkmenchay, signed in February 1828, forced Iran to cede Yerevan and Nakhchivan and imposed a crippling 20-million-ruble indemnity, obligations that placed the Qajar treasury under severe strain precisely when these coins were being struck.
Tabaristan-mint gold tumans from this narrow window are considerably scarcer than Tehran or Tabriz issues of the same reign.
