Reversbeschreibung A large wheel or spoked design occupies the central field, a common device on Etruscan aes grave coinage functioning as a value mark or civic symbol. Four spokes radiate from a central hub, dividing the field into quadrants, with the Etruscan inscription distributed across the field. The letters VELA and ΘRI, reading as the toponym for Volaterrae, appear within the quadrants formed by the wheel's spokes. The flan is irregular and cast, with a rough, pitted surface consistent with the aes grave series. The design is bold and schematic, typical of the Value series coinage attributed to the Etruscan city of Volaterrae.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Volaterrae — the Etruscan city known to Romans as Volaterrae and to its own inhabitants as Velathri — issued heavy cast bronze during a period when Rome's allied and subject communities were still maintaining independent monetary production. This triens belongs to a series that precedes Roman standardization of the As, placing it squarely in the transitional aes grave tradition of central Italy. The weight alone reflects the pre-reform libral or near-libral standard, before successive reductions gutted bronze coinage across the peninsula during the Punic War period.
