Ratchis ruled as King of the Lombards from 744 until 749, when he abdicated under direct pressure from Pope Zacharias — a remarkable moment in which papal authority effectively ended a reign. He retired to the monastery of Montecassino, later briefly re-emerging during his brother Aistulf's reign. The tremissis, a third-solidus denomination inherited from Byzantine monetary practice, continued in Lombard coinage long after Byzantium's practical influence over northern Italy had collapsed.
The "without body" classification in the MIR system distinguishes this type by its bust treatment — a cataloging distinction rather than a survival anomaly.
