Liutprand ruled the Lombard Kingdom for over three decades — an exceptional reign by any early medieval standard — and his gold tremissis coinage reflects the period's complicated monetary reality. The Lombards never operated fully independent mints in the Byzantine sense; their gold issues drew heavily on degraded Byzantine prototypes, and the tremissis denomination itself was inherited wholesale from late Roman fiscal machinery. By Liutprand's time, fineness had declined perceptibly from earlier Lombard issues.
The MEC I 322 cross-field variant sits in a classificatory grey zone, hence the "cf." citation — close enough to the type to anchor attribution, distinct enough that no cataloguer has forced the fit.
