Liutprand ruled the Lombard Kingdom longer than any other king in its history, and his reign saw a deliberate program of legal codification and administrative consolidation that extended into the coinage. This tremissis was struck by the moneyer Aufermo, whose name appears on the coin as issuing authority — a Lombard practice reflecting the personal accountability system by which individual moneyers, rather than a mint institution, bore legal responsibility for the metal's fineness.
The gold content of Lombard tremisses declined gradually across the seventh and eighth centuries, tracking the broader Mediterranean contraction of bullion supplies following the Arab conquests of Byzantine North Africa and Syria.
