| Opis rewersu | A plain cross centered within a beaded or dotted wreath, a design derived directly from the reverse type of late Roman imperial tremisses struck under Valentinian III and his successors. The surrounding legend, encircling the wreath, is a degenerate and nonsensical imitation of the original Roman reverse inscription, the letter forms having been severely corrupted through successive copying by Germanic die-cutters unfamiliar with Latin. The overall composition closely follows official Roman tremissis prototypes but betrays its barbarous origin through irregular flan shape and debased engraving. |
