Cunincpert ruled the Lombard Kingdom from 688 following the assassination of his father Perctarit's co-ruler arrangements, consolidating power after defeating the rival claimant Alahis at the Battle of the Adda in 689. His gold tremisses continued the Lombard practice of issuing coinage in imitation of Byzantine prototypes — a deliberate act of fiscal pragmatism in a kingdom whose monetary economy depended on compatibility with Byzantine trade networks in northern Italy. The Arslan classification distinguishes multiple die groupings within this type, and attribution between them remains contested among specialists working from the MIR corpus.
