Aripert II came to power after defeating his co-ruler Liutpert in 700 AD, and his reign ended when Ansprand's Bavarian-backed forces pushed him into flight — he drowned in the Po attempting to escape with his treasury in 712. The "hand in field" feature on this tremissis is a deliberate iconographic addition marking a distinct emission within his coinage, catalogued separately from the base type at MEC I 321, and its precise administrative or workshop significance remains debated.
