Aripert II came to the Lombard throne in 701 after defeating and drowning his co-ruler Liutpert in the Po River. His reign ended with equal violence — deposed by Ansprand in 712, he fled with the royal treasury, and according to Paul the Deacon, drowned in the Ticino while attempting the crossing, weighed down by the gold he refused to abandon.
Lombard tremisses of this period closely imitated late Byzantine prototypes, a deliberate monetary policy that kept them acceptable in Mediterranean trade circuits dominated by Constantinople's gold standard. MEC I#321 places this type firmly within the Pavia mint's output.
