Beschrijving voorzijde Crude Nagari script inscription occupying the central field of this irregularly shaped hammered copper flan, reading 'Sri' (श्री), an auspicious honorific. The characters are rendered in a naive, somewhat archaic style typical of small Kathiawar princely state coinage of the mid-eighteenth century. The flan edges are irregular and uneven, consistent with hand-struck production methods of the period.

Aanvullende informatie

Bhavnagar's coinage under Bhavsinhji I was issued in the name of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan III, whose reign lasted a matter of months in 1759 before he was deposed — making him one of the most nominal sovereigns ever invoked on a princely state's copper. By that point, Mughal imperial authority had collapsed so thoroughly that the attribution was pure formality, a legal fiction maintained by Rajput chiefs who had effectively governed their own territories for decades.
