Obverse description A highly detailed coiled dragon, rendered in high relief, occupies the central field, its scaled body writhing dynamically and its fearsome head turned to face the viewer. The dragon is enclosed within a fine inner beaded circle. Along the upper periphery, outside the beaded border, seven Japanese characters reading '大日本 明治七年' (Great Japan, Year 7 of Meiji) are arranged in a shallow arc. The lower legend, divided across the left and right fields outside the beaded circle, reads '420 GRAINS. TRADE DOLLAR. 900 FINE' in Roman capitals, separated by a central dot. The entire design is bordered by a toothed milled rim.
