Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Mongolian People's Revolution of 1921, when Mongolian and Soviet forces expelled the Chinese administration and established what became the world's second socialist republic. The commemorative program of 1971 was one of the first times Mongolia produced coins explicitly for collector export — hard currency was a practical concern for Ulaanbaatar throughout the Soviet period, and anniversary issues were a reliable source of it.
