Additional information

Qandahar's brief existence as a semi-independent emirate under Sher Ali's son Wali Mohammad Ayub Khan produced only a handful of gold issues before British forces dismantled the principality following the Second Anglo-Afghan War. This tilla belongs to that compressed window between the British withdrawal after the Battle of Maiwand in July 1880 — where Ayub Khan's forces routed a British brigade — and the subsequent occupation of Qandahar by General Roberts in September of the same year. The city's mint operated for mere months under this authority.
