Zahir Shah took the Afghan throne in November 1933 following the assassination of his father Nadir Shah, ascending at nineteen years old under the effective control of his uncles. This tilla was struck in the early months of that reign, when the royal family was consolidating power after a decade of near-continuous dynastic violence that had seen three rulers deposed or killed since 1919.
The tilla denomination traces its weight standard to Mughal-era gold coinage, though by the 1930s it functioned more as a prestige issue than a circulating trade piece.
