Reverse description A large stylized thistle — the national emblem of Scotland — rises from the base of the field, its foliage and crowned flower head rendered in bold relief at the centre of the design. Four crowns are disposed in the angles formed by the thistle's branching stems, creating a cruciform arrangement that fills the flan. The surrounding Latin legend, separated by pellet and floral stops and contained within a beaded border, reads FLORENT SCEPT PIIS REGNA HIS IOVA DAT NVMERA, conveying the pious sentiment that Jehovah grants flourishing sceptres and kingdoms to the righteous.
