Reverse description A large naturalistic thistle plant, with prominent crowned flower head and flanking serrated leaves extending across the field, occupies the central device, surmounted by a royal crown. The thistle, the national emblem of Scotland and the type-giving device of this series, is rendered in fine relief consistent with late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Edinburgh Mint workmanship. The regnal date appears integrated within the circular Latin legend, which is contained between inner and outer beaded borders.
