Botswana's thebe coinage debuted in 1976, six years after independence, when the country finally severed its monetary dependence on the South African rand and established the pula as its national currency. The word "thebe" means shield in Setswana — a deliberate naming choice that carried political weight in a newly sovereign state navigating relationships with apartheid South Africa on one border and white-minority Rhodesia on another.
The aluminium-magnesium alloy was a practical choice for a low-denomination coin in a developing economy, keeping production costs minimal for a unit worth a hundredth of the pula.
