Zsigmond Báthori's thaler issues of this period fall squarely within his most volatile years as Prince of Transylvania — a time when he was simultaneously negotiating the Holy League alliance against the Ottomans, abdicating and reclaiming his throne multiple times, and executing dozens of pro-Ottoman nobles in 1594 without trial. The coins were struck to fund a war he believed in with an intensity that repeatedly destabilized his own court.
Resch 131 is well-documented in the specialist literature but genuinely scarce in commerce, appearing far less frequently than the later thaler types of his reign.
