Wolfgang William of Pfalz-Neuburg inherited Ravensberg in 1609 as part of the Jülich-Cleves-Berg succession crisis — one of the most legally tangled territorial disputes of the early seventeenth century, involving the Holy Roman Emperor, the Dutch Republic, Brandenburg, and Spain simultaneously. He held Ravensberg uneasily for decades, and coinage from the county under his authority is correspondingly sparse. This thaler dates to the final years of his reign; he died in 1653, having governed through nearly the entirety of the Thirty Years' War.
