Additional information

Wolfgang Wilhelm of Pfalz-Neuburg acquired the County of Ravensberg through the Jülich-Cleves succession crisis — one of the most legally tangled inheritance disputes of the early seventeenth century, which helped ignite armed conflict in the Rhineland a decade before the Thirty Years' War formally escalated. His conversion to Catholicism in 1613 secured Spanish backing and ultimately gave him Jülich and Berg, but Ravensberg, a Protestant enclave deep in Westphalia, came along as part of the package. Coinage from this county during his rule is scarce; Ravensberg had no established mint tradition of its own.
