Wolfgang George ruled Stolberg-Stolberg during one of the most economically destructive phases of the Thirty Years' War, and this thaler was struck squarely within the Kipper und Wipperzeit's aftermath — a period when debasement of small coinage had so thoroughly poisoned public trust that full-weight silver thalers became essential instruments of commercial credibility. The County of Stolberg held silver mining rights in the Harz region, giving the counts both the material and the political motivation to issue heavy coinage when neighboring territories could not.
Wolfgang George's reign at Stolberg-Stolberg ended with his death in 1626, making this a short-window issue across just three years.
