Wolfgang George ruled Stolberg-Stolberg jointly with his brothers under the county's entail system, and 1623 places this thaler squarely in the catastrophic early phase of the Thirty Years' War — a moment when small German territorial lords were minting aggressively, partly to meet military contribution demands and partly because the Kipper und Wipper currency crisis of 1619–1623 had so debased circulating coinage that full-weight thalers were being hoarded or melted almost immediately upon issue.
The Friederich reference situates this among the documented Stolberg family thalers catalogued by Ernst Friederich, whose work on the dynasty's complex succession of joint and partitioned rulers remains the standard authority on attributing these issues.
