The County of Orsini-Rosenberg was an obscure Austrian mediatized holding, and this thaler is essentially the only coin the family ever issued — KM#1 is also, functionally, KM#last. Wolfgang Franz Xaver struck it in 1793 almost certainly as a prestige piece rather than for circulation, a not uncommon practice among minor Habsburg-era nobility asserting comital privilege in an increasingly centralized imperial system. The timing is pointed: by 1793, the Holy Roman Empire was fracturing under revolutionary pressure from France, and small territorial lords had reason to advertise whatever sovereignty remained to them.
