Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau became Archbishop of Salzburg in 1587 at just 28 years old, owing his appointment largely to his Medici connections on his mother's side rather than any particular ecclesiastical distinction. He would prove one of the most autocratic — and architecturally ambitious — rulers the prince-archbishopric ever produced, effectively rebuilding Salzburg in an Italian baroque manner that still defines the city. His thalers funded that transformation directly; the archbishopric's salt revenues gave him the financial independence to mint prolifically without relying on Habsburg goodwill.
He died in captivity in 1617, imprisoned by his own cathedral chapter after a political and personal scandal involving his long-term companion Salome Alt.
