William V ruled the united duchies of Jülich-Kleve-Berg from 1539 until his death in 1592, but the last decade of his reign was effectively managed by regents — he had suffered a severe mental breakdown in 1566 from which he never recovered. Coins struck in his name during this period, including Ravensberg issues of the late 1570s, were authorized and administered by others while William lived out his years in a state his contemporaries described as permanent incapacity.
Ravensberg was a relatively minor county within the Jülich-Kleve-Berg conglomerate, which makes its independent thaler issues uncommon survivors. The Dav GT I reference places this squarely within the broader German territorial thaler sequence, but Stange 77 is the more useful locator for specialists working this particular county.
