William V ruled Hesse-Cassel during one of the most destructive phases of the Thirty Years' War, and 1627 placed him squarely in the thick of it — Imperial and League forces under Tilly had overrun much of northwestern Germany the previous year, and Hessian territory was under severe military and financial pressure. Coinage of this period often served immediate fiscal demands as much as anything else.
Davenport ST#6733 distinguishes this issue within a complex sequence of Hessian thalers from William's reign; the ST prefix in Davenport denotes a "standard" thaler type, separating it from the speciesdalers and multiples catalogued separately.
