William V ruled the United Duchies through one of the most politically precarious decades of the sixteenth century. His 1543 capitulation to Charles V at Venlo — surrendering Guelders and Zutphen after a catastrophically brief military campaign — left him stripped of ambition and largely dependent on Habsburg goodwill for the remainder of his reign. The thalers issued across this decade reflect a duchy reconsolidating rather than projecting power.
