Issued by Duke Wilhelm of Saxe-Weimar to commemorate the reconstruction of Wilhelmsburg Castle in Weimar, this thaler marks a deliberate act of cultural recovery following the devastation of the Thirty Years' War, which had ended only four years prior. The Wettin duchy had suffered badly through the conflict — both economically and physically — and the rebuilding of the ducal residence carried pointed political significance for a ruler reasserting authority over a battered territory.
