Obverse description Draped bust of Landgrave Wilhelm IX of Hesse-Cassel facing right, his hair dressed in a queue tied with a ribbon at the nape. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine engraving detail, set within a plain inner field. The surrounding legend reads WILHELMUS IX. D.G.HASS.LANDG.COM.HAN., abbreviated from the ruler's full Latin titulature, running along the toothed border.

Reverse description The crowned arms of Hesse-Cassel displayed on an oval escutcheon, supported on either side by a rampant lion, the whole composition set on an elaborate baroque cartouche base bearing the tablet inscribed BIEBERER SILBER, denoting the Bieber mine silver source. The date 17-85 is divided to either side of the base, with the engraver's initials IFH placed below. The upper legend X EINE FEINE MARCK. indicates the coin's fineness standard, running within the milled border.
