Two large decorative cartouche-style scrolls flank the central monument, each bearing biographical inscriptions recording the duke's birth, baptism, death, and interment dates. A pedestal at the base of the monument carries the name WILHELMUS D. IV above a three-line motto tablet reading BENE FACIENDO BENEFECIT, flanked by foliate sprays. The circumferential legend, rendered in Latin capitals, records the full ducal titulature of Wilhelm IV of Saxe-Weimar. The overall composition is executed in the elaborate Baroque commemorative style characteristic of mid-seventeenth-century German memorial thalers. |
