| Obverse description | Central field displays an ornate funerary obelisk or catafalque surmounted by a radiant sun motif, with a portrait medallion of Duke Wilhelm IV set into its face amid elaborate scrollwork and drapery. Two large decorative cartouche-style scrolls flank the central monument, each bearing biographical inscriptions recording the duke's birth, baptism, death, and interment dates. A pedestal at the base of the monument carries the name WILHELMUS D. IV above a three-line motto tablet reading BENE FACIENDO BENEFECIT, flanked by foliate sprays. The circumferential legend, rendered in Latin capitals, records the full ducal titulature of Wilhelm IV of Saxe-Weimar. The overall composition is executed in the elaborate Baroque commemorative style characteristic of mid-seventeenth-century German memorial thalers. |
