The Kronentaler pattern of 1833 was struck in direct response to negotiations surrounding the Zollverein — the German customs union that took formal effect on January 1, 1834. Württemberg, as a founding member, needed coinage compatible with the new monetary framework, and several German states issued experimental pieces in the preceding months to test designs and specifications before committing to full production. Most were never circulated.
The KahntDS and KR references both identify this as a distinct subtype, suggesting multiple die combinations were explored in this trial series. The .868 fineness aligns with Kronentaler convention rather than the Vereinsmünze standard that would follow.
