Anhalt-Harzgerode was among the smallest of the Anhalt partition states, carved out in 1635 when the Anhalt territories were divided among the sons of Prince John George I. William, who ruled from 1670 until his death in 1709, was the line's only significant ruler — and the principality itself was absorbed into Anhalt-Bernburg shortly after he died, ending the Harzgerode branch entirely. Thalers of this type were struck in very limited quantities, befitting a territory of negligible economic weight.
Davenport's listing under ST#6013 places it among the smaller German state thalers of the period, a category where survival rates are low simply due to original mintage.
